Update: does this look weird? w/pic

I am planning a small quilt to practice my quilting and binding techniques before working on my 4.5'x5' quilt top (my first).  I am making the little quilt as a windowsill pad for the cat to sit on in the winter (better than the ratty towel she had last winter), and using scraps from the bigger quilt.

The pattern I came up with is about 9" wide and 42" long and would be two columns wide, alternating 4 patch squares and string-pieced squares because not all of my squares are large enough to cut 2.5"x2.5" squares for fourpatch. Would the string-piecing look weird mixed with 4 patches? They are all solid color clothing fabrics (samples for Old Navy clothes, actually), if that makes a difference. I would have 2 dark and 2 light squares in the four-patches, with the darks making a diagonal from left to right throughout, then alternate light and dark in the string-piecing, and have those pieces on the opposite diagonal, if that makes sense.

I agree - I think it sounds fun and perfectly quilty.  I have seen quilts w/ piecing mixed with string blocks and it works.  Sometimes you never know until you try it, right, but that's part of the fun!

Oh, do you know where I could see a mixed piecing and string-pieced quilt? Thanks for the encouragement... hopefully this weekend I can make a couple blocks to test it out.

Here's some four-patches and string-pieced blocks I made last night. This segment is just under half of the total window-sill quilt I would make (long and skinny). I think it might be too wild, but I'd love to have other opinions.

Thanks so much! I think I'll make the rest of it and see how I like it. Especially, thanks Zuma, my fellow Knitty!  Alternately, I've decided I'd make a strip of the string-piece blocks down the middle with alternating dark/light blocks (cutting the four-patches in half) as a border. i have some other ideas for hacking up the four-patches for a border, but I'd have to cut up paper to see how it looks, I don't have enough four-patches to sacrifice and I can't figure out how to make diagonal cuts in Excel.
