I have a Sony Cybershot DSC-W30.  It fits in my pocket and takes great pictures.  Since it's a name-brand you'll be paying a bit more, but with that you get better quality, and Sony has awesome warranty service if something goes wrong.  I got this one for $200 including the rechargeable battery on eBay, I think it retails for about $300.

Then again, you might want to get a cheap camera if you're taking it somewhere you're not supposed to have it... that way you'd be losing less money if it was confiscated.

Definitely get a camera with OPTICAL zoom, not DIGITAL.  With digital zoom, picture quality goes down when you zoom in.  Not what you want if you're going to be taking pictures from far away most of the time.
