I used straights, I have 3 different colors in mine, so the seam isnt that noticable. What if you knitted a big flower to put on the seam? You would still be able to see a little bit of it, but it wouldn't be SO noticable...

Crud.  I was wondering if I had enough yarn to make this hat, and went to the site to check out the pattern and saw the notice.  People suck.  I think it may be the universe telling me I have too many projects already and that it's time to stop.  (or maybe the universe is just telling me to wait until she has the pattern for purchase and make this hat after the first of the year...)

heh, the funny thing is that when I showed my friend the pattern, she said her mom taught her almost the exact same hat pattern when she was 7, it just was 14 rows instead of 12.

Actually, I think the pattern is written out a couple pages back in this thread.

Yikes... I went to that link to print out the pattern for future use, and it said this:

"Because the Copyright of this Pattern has been ignored and this Pattern has been distributed by others, copied and posted on Yahoo Groups without my permission and sold by third parties, it is no longer available as a free pattern."

Oh well...   Sad

well, the most basic hat pattern I know works like this (which is basically how she did the H20 hat pattern):

get any size needle, and size yarn, measure your head, and do a gauge.  figure out how many stitches you need to fit around your head.  round to a multiple of ten if it's close, but if not, that's fine too.

if you don't want it to roll, make the first few rows ribbing, garter stitch, seed stitch, anything else you want.  if you want the bottom to roll, just do all stockette.

work in stockette for 5 inches (more or less to taste).

then, starting on a k row, k 7, k 3 tog, k 7, k3 tog, repeat across row.  if there are extra stitches (b/c you didn't have a multiple of 10) just knit a couple and knit a couple tog.  p next row.

k 5, k 3 tog, k 5, k 3 tog, repeat across row.  p next row.

k 3, k 3 tog, k 3, k 3 tog, repeat across row.  p next row.

k 1, k 3 tog, k 1, k 3 tog, repeat across row.  p next row.

cut yarn and put it through live stitches twice (for strength) and pull to close the top of the hat.  seam down the back.

this is how I've done most of my hats, except I usually get sloppy w/ the whole measuring and gauge thing, plus I usually forget to count while doing decreases.   Wink  I originally found it in a craft book from the sixties when I was about 8, but forgot about it until after my first 3 or so hats.  but most of these weren't wearable since I screw up on gauge a lot.   Tongue
