Thats awsome, Staralee. I love the "whiteness"  Smiley Its funny, going into a yarn store and seeing all the pretty colours, I forget how nice white is.

Okay, this will be my first attempt at knitting something non-rectangular. I just have a few questions. When you get to the last row, you're not actually binding off, right? You're just sort of running the yarn back through the live stitches and then drawing it up straight like a drawstring?

As for the stitching up the back, it's mattress stitches that I'm supposed to use?

Ooh, I can't wait for vacation next week so I can make hats!

Yup, just run the yarn end (cut it pretty long) through the stitches as you take them off your needle and pull tightly to close the hole. I use mattress stitch (although I'm not good at it Sad) and I think its what a lot of knitters use.

What is this "veil stitch" you speak of? Please excuse my ignorance!

Thanks! That's what I thought. I can't wait to make this hat! I bought some circular needles to play with over the holiday, so after I master this one, I can't wait to start a different hat.

Wow, I just caught up on the thread.  The pattern is down.....what a shame!!!!   I still haven't made the hat and hoped to use my time off to make it.  And then if it was easy to read, I planned to buy her cami pattern and the ribbed cardi too to do over New Year's.  The free pattern is what got me there in the first place.  If someone was selling it and she was offering it free...........I would rather use her free pattern and buy the others as a show of support.  Not be told to take a hike b/c of someone else's actions.

I wanted to add that it really and truly stinks that someone would SELL her free pattern.  I can understand her response, even if it is a basic variation hat.  But I would hope that she realizes this thread was about the one hour hat and also introducing many, myself included, to a site and patterns we might not have found or been willing to try had Gertie's hat not be so darn cute.
