I'm pretty excited about this too!

auntiem- I'd put down who you most identify with, even if they were around before feminism was. I'm thinking of putting Joan of Arc down in mine and I'm not even sure if she's a feminist or transgender icon!!  As long as they're someone whose politics/life you admire and they were respectful to women that's fine by me personally.

tindad- What really excited me about this swap was the opportunity to combine at least two of my loves (geekdom?)- feminism and craft.  A lot of the women around me have been getting into reclaiming traditional crafts and putting their own personal slant on them... whether that's about being anti the diet industry, anti-patriarchy, anti-colonisation, post-modern fems, pro-choice, anti-unequal porn etc.  I've been seeing some amazing stuff around!!  Here's some... feel free to add your own faves...

the women we admire because they were "feminists" before the term was even coined? (for example Nora Zeale Hurston)

Please! Eleanor of Acquitaine. Elizabeth I. All feminists before the term was coined.

Definitely Eleanor of Acquitaine!  Possibly the only woman who had the integrity to play her on camera was Katherine Hepburn yeah?

This is a cool idea for a swap! I'm minoring in gender and women's studies, and would so love to join, but I haven't been signed up for a month. If there's a round 2, I'll be in. Can't wait to see what everyone makes.

i'm soooo tempted by this swap! i grew up super feminist, and then kinda moved away from it due to my politics, local feminist organization i didn't agree with and a fear of assumptions made about me if i identified as such (not the man hating, hairy legs assumptions, more the anti-sex, transphobic/wbw are the only real women assumptions, which are unfortunately so often true!).

i've been becoming more comfortable with it again, and it would be totally fun to do a swap around this theme. i'm hoping i can get caught up enough to sign up closer to the end date.

in the mean time, i thought i'd share an absolutely amazing book, that i think everyone, regardless of their "brand" of feminism, should read - whores and other feminists, edited by jill nagle. they're pieces written by self identified sex workers about their feminist identities, and they seriously blew me away the first time i read it a few years ago.

i saw a shirt the other day, and i can't remember where (an ad maybe?) that was a stencil of someone holding a bra over flames... it would be awesome for this swap!

Oh my god. I want to join this swap SO bad. But I'm scared to. I'm only 17, so I still live with my parents, and my dad one of those people that believes "women should stay in their places and submit to their husbands" So feminist things wouldn't go over well with him. Probably just as bad as the rainbow stickers/things I have everywhere. But then again, my room is COVERED in gay pride things, and he still hasn't caught on, so maybe it'd be the same with this too? AHHHH help. I don't know what to do.

Well, I don't see how he could object to possitive female role models for his daughter and you having pride in the accomplishments of women.
Maybe as long as your partner leaves the S.C.U.M manifesto screen printed t-shirt out of your package he wouldn't catch on? Smiley
