I really like this! Did you use a pattern or anything?
Well not a pattern as such... More a series of measurements! I got thr idea from my friend Jayne, so credit goes to her!
My stepkids are half-Japanese (my husband's first wife) and I would love to make these for both of them.
Well, they're really easy to make, I daresay you could whip up one for each of them in an evening!
INSTRUCTIONS:Sorry I don't have any photos of each step, but I'll just describe how it's done - it's not an exact pattern anyway!
I am making another two of these shortly, as presents for my cousin's kids, so I will do a proper tutorial then! Watch this space! 
Basically, get a shirt that fits your LO and take a few measurements:
Measure horizontally where the shirt is widest, then measure vertically where the shirt is tallest, trace out a rectangle with those dimensions. That is your back piece.
For the sleeves, measure the sleeve of the existing shirt at the widest point, and also determine how long you want them. The sleeves will be cut against the fold of the fabric, so the fabric piece will be twice the size of the paper pattern!
For the 2 front pieces, start with the same dimensions as the back piece. Mark 3 sections on the shorter side. Crap illustration but you'll have 2 marks kinda like this along the shorter (top) edge:

Then place the sleeve pattern piece in its place next to the back piece. on the back piece mark a point 1-2 inches (wherever you think it looks nice!) below the bottom edge of the sleeve. This will be where the kimono is tied.
Use a ruler and draw a diagonal line from the top left mark to the mark you made on the right. cut along this line and you have your front piece. Mirror this to cut the second front part.
You will need to add a seam allowance and hem allowance to these measurements, I added 10mm seam allowance, and approx 25mm hem allowance on the sleeves and the bottom of the body.
Becuse I am anal, I overlocked all the edges... then hemmed the sleeves before assembling as follows.
1. Place the two front pieces on top of the back piece, right sides together. Stitch along the shoulder seams, then iron the seams open. open up flat with the right side up.
2. Take the sleeves and place them on top of the body, right side facing down. The middle fold of the sleeve should meet the shoulder seam. Stitch in place and iron the seams open.
3. Now all you have to do is lay the kimono wrong side facing out, stitch from the sleeve openings down to the hemline, taking care to make sure the join in the armpit is neat.
4. Use bias binding around the remaining raw edges and to make ties. Finish by hemming up the bottom edge.
Clear as mud, huh? I am not the best at explaining things...sorry!!!
