I got this idea from a "metal clothes for kids" site, but it was a skirt to put over a onesie, so we went to search for a pattern that would suit this idea well.

What we (my mom and I) used was a Minnie Mouse model from a costume patterns book, with red satin bow & trimming. I thought the poofy sleeves and contrasting collar would be over the top but it works pretty well. And if you're 2 years old, there's no such thing as over the top.

It does get a lot of double takes since it's a very preppy looking dress but the skirt is made with

Skull fabric  Grin I can't count the number of shocked olded ladies I've encountered. I can't wait to get black lacquer shoes to match. I've tried to find red shoes, but they're all for older girls  Undecided

This is so super cute.  I love the contrast of the sweet style dress and the skulls!  Great idea and great job!  Your little girl is adorable.  She looks very pleased with her new dress!

I LOVE the dress!  And it looks like your daughter loves it as well.    And I love YOUR moxie!
Just tell the old biddies that the skull & crossbones is an traditional symbol of protection.
Black patent leather sandals would be precious.  Red?  Too much.

Red flamenco or ballerina slippers would be awesome and they would be kicking under regular jeans too.

However she's too much of a tomboy to invest in those type of shoes right now.

I love it!  The juxtapostion of sweet retro-style dress and hardcore pirate makes me happy...or it could be the uber-cute smiling child who clearly thinks her dress rocks--definately both.

Minnie Mouse! Clever! I was looking at the dress thinking 'Man that looks familular'. She looks so cute in it!
