I recently purchased my first car ever, a *pre-loved* 1998 VW Beetle.
Within two weeks of having it I was rear-ended. Cry  No serious damage was done but the lights/lenses around my license plate were broken and a good amount of paint chipped off of my bumper, it's fiberglass so it didn't dent or break. I FINALLY got the check from that guy's insurance company and it's a GROSS overestimate (totally awesome for me!) so I've decided that I'd like to totally repaint the car. My dad will be painting it and the sky is pretty much the limit. The only thing we're not really able to do is airbrush work.

I've been trying to think of different ways I could potentially paint the car and I'd really dig seeing what you guys could come up with! Post pictures you find online, things you draw, or just explain it to me and I can sketch it up.

Here are some photos I found online (just for inspiration, not concrete ideas):

Flames are a definite maybe.

and I've been playing around with the idea of doing lace panels/racing stripes on the car. Here are a few sample pics of what I mean:

Any suggestions or ideas you have would be much appreciated!! Thx.  Grin

I've never seen lace panels before, I think you should do that! Flames are overdone!

I was thinking the same thing. Plus, flames are sort of bad ass-y and the beetle is cute and sort of cartoon-y. Chaknow?

That lace is pretty awesome! It's really funky! If you're really feeling going all out, how bout something like this?

It's the shagmobile from Austin Powers 2. This is just a toy version of it, but they actually gave away the original car on MTV while that movie was in theaters. I always kind of wanted one. Even if you don't go this all out, it could serve as inspiration. Especially if you like bright colors!

Awesome! Bright colors are a definite yes! I don't really care for the car in the darker colors it comes in (black, dark blue, etc.) but I love it in either really light pastels or just bright saturated colors.

Very neat, and I am definitely willing to go all out. I'm only going to paint my car once and I want it to be awesome!

Aww mate, my boss used to keep a postcard of a customed beetle in her office where I work, I'll try and find a picture of it its really cute...

I did a google and it seems the design on it is by wallpaper designer Mibo and is called "taking flight". It was customed with a collection of decal stickers VW launched. It was this car but it had more decals than this one.

Perhaps have a look at some of Mibos designs you might find some inspiration there.

Or you could go all out crazy and encrust the car with jewels, the lot.

I hope these pics work? Not too internet savvy. Oh forgot to mention,
it might just be me, but I don't like the lace, I think it looks a bit tatty..

I did see those decals, they only offer them in the UK from what I read. There's one in the collection that I liked more than the birds, it's called "Mudsplats":

If you look, there are little swirlys and such in the splatters.  Grin

i'm not very savvy in the world of car painting but if your dad is doing it by hand with stencils, or what not, wouldn't it be better to keep it a bit more on the simple side? 'cause if you mess up it wouldn't be that much of a deal. If you did the lace, and some part messed up, it would take a lot more to fix that due to the intricacy. Please correct me if I'm wrong though 'cause I'm not that versed in car painting Tongue

The lace isn't painted by hand!  Shocked You lay the lace (a tablecloth, fabric, what have you) over the car and paint on top of it. The lace acts as a stencil. It's pretty neat.

My father would be doing the painting but I would be placing the design and taping it off, etc. so the work is on me. I did flames on my dad's truck a few weeks ago and they turned out really well. I'm at work right now but when I get home this evening I'll post a photo so you guys can see.  Tongue
