So I've been making some soap, and it looks like everyone is getting this for Christmas this year.  It's rosemary-mint...scented with rosemary and peppermint EOs with some ground up mint leaves and rosemary mixed in at trace.  I still need to work on getting nice smooth edges and sides on my bars...

Nice!  I bought some lye yesterday, so I'm trying to figure out what my first recipe will be.  I'm kind of fascinated by carrot juice, and I read that dried parsley flakes stay green if you add them in.

Green tea stays green if you add it, too.  My mom bought me this book on making translucent soap...but I've been too wussy to try it yet.  It involves adding alcohol and sugar and cooking it...I'm not sure I want to go through all the hassles, but it does look pretty in the book.  Has anyone tried it?

Do you use a stick blender to stir your soap?

Nope, no stick blender, it traces really fast so I have never needed to.  I just use the simple crisco/lye recipe.

Yep, I use:
3 lbs crisco
6 oz. lye
12 oz. water

And then for scent I used 1/3 oz each of peppermint and rosemary oils, or 2/3 oz each of grapefruit and sweet orange oils.  I found that using crisco made my soaps last a lot longer than when I used a palm/coconut mixture, but that's probably something I messed up?  It's just easier to get shortening at the store than have oils shipped to me.

Your lip balm of the month club is genius!

How many bars of soap does the 3lb Crisco recipe yield?

I'm seriously going to make soap today, I think.  I just need to find my scale so I can measure the lye.  I think I'll do the green tea thing.
