I finally figured out to crochet. I haven't figured out how to correctly write a pattern so I apologize in advance for any crochet faux pas I'm about to make. Feel free to correct my mistakes, crochet goddesses.

I used a skein of Lion's Brand Landscapes and size N crochet hook.
I chained 3 and made a ring.

I then dc 8 into the ring.

Next round: dc 2 into each of the 8 dcs (total 16)

Next round dc1 into the first chain, dc2 into the next 7, dc1 into the next and dc2 into the following 7 (this gives a total of 30 chains (?if that's what they're called??!!)

Then I worked  7 rounds (pretty much until the yarn ran out.

I added the felt heart and embellished it w/ sequins and beads.

Nice Touch with that embellished heart applique....very different!
How did you attach it to the hat?....(was it with the embroidery floss?)

Thanks WG and Laarnissa. Yes, I did use embroidery floss. For the felt and also for the sequins (useda french knot to secure the sequins in lieu of beads).
