Mine is just an open top patch-style pocket. I hemmed the top with the toy loop/key clip sewn into the hem, then turned under the rest of the edge and stitched it down to the outside of the outer body piece before sewing all the pieces together.
I would suggest moving it further up the body of the MT, mine is pretty low and her back presses right against it. So I could fit maybe one very flat envelope in there!
A side-zippered one would be very cool, but I have no idea how you would go about doing that, other than using an invisible-type zipper. I would love to see one! I'm sure it's do-able, I have a pouch sling with an integrated pocket like that, but I didn't make it.
