I'm not sure if I should have posted this in the stitch 'n BOTCH section; I'll let you guys be the judge.

So I start out on the God Save the Queen hat from Pretty in Punk, pictured here;

After spending hours in intarsia/bobbin hell, I finish the hat portion and it's HUGE! Loose and floppy and enormous. The pattern in the book says to felt it, but I used a different yarn than the book, and I doubted that it would shrink enough.

 Here's where I ruined it; I decided to throw it in the wash and see if it would shrink before investing any more time and energy into it. The book says to carelessly toss it in the washer, so I did. What emerged was a TEENSY felt cup! I laughed and cried at the same time. I stretched and pulled and stretched it as much as I could, but it's far too small to be of any use to me. Plus, since it's felted so tightly, I can't even add the icords and the mohawk fringe!!  Embarrassed

Here it is, in all it's pathetic glory, being modelled by my creepy mannequin head;

Accepting condolences and commiseration while I start ALL OVER AGAIN! (boohoo, but on the bright side I have ample yarn left over for this)  Cry

Sad! Did you felt a swatch before you started? Perhaps your yarn needs to be hand felted to prevent over-shrinkage next time.

too bad b/c that's so cute! you can always donate it to goodwill so a smaller headed punk can buy it and wear it someday.

Ouch!

Can you cut it down the middle, where it's seamed, and add a wide prefelted band of red or white or blue in the middle? Then fringe the band with Mohawk?

I believe this can be saved. Even improved, since all the Union Jackness would show then.

Thanks for the hopeful comments, guys!

ScotSkipper; Great idea! I believe I will try your suggestion of adding a strip down the center and adding the mohawk to that. I'm still concerned that the hat is too shallow (ie- doesn't come down very far on my forehead), but it's worth a shot, seeing as it's not good for much else! Thanks!!

I had forgotten that felted knitting can be cut like fabric... I could even make a change purse or makeup bag or something...

As soon as I saw a picture of a similar hat online I've wanted to make it!  How does the fringe get added?  I suppose I could just make any hat and add the fringe?

I don't see why you couldn't add fringe to any old hat. This one was discussed in some detail in this thread;

I might take you up on that if it still doesn't fit! Thanks!
