1941 Apron from Calico Cat Patterns - two of 'em!
«

I bought the 1941 Apron pattern from
Calico Cat patterns
months ago, but my sewing machine was still broken and life was busy. Now my sewing machine is fixed, and after a marathon couple of weekends making FOUR adult sized harry potter robes (that'll be another post soon) I felt like I could tackle anything. After those robes and their endless hems, this felt like a breeze!
I started mine first, but had to put it aside partway through to quickly make one for my friend Jaime's bridal shower. (Nothing like forgetting a gift until the day-of.) Here's hers, made with fabric I had on hand at the time, luckily her wedding colors (light green and blue):
Here's a close-up of the gem-initial-appliques I put on the pocket:
and the back. (No action shots of Jaime's, alas. I forgot to take my camera to the shower.)
So I got that squared away, and then I went to work on finishing mine. I used single-fold bias tape on hers, and double-fold on mine. No particular reason, I just didn't think about it.
It's kind of Strawberry Shortcake-ish. I dig it.
I made this pattern in a 2x (love that it had sizes) and I think I actually could have gone down a size and been okay, but this is really comfy, so I'm very happy. Loved the pattern - it was easy to understand and put together, and the paper it was printed on was a lot nicer than the tissue of the big company patterns, which was really nice to work with. I'll definitely be making this again.

That's a great apron, and an even better last minute gift.
Good job. I'll have to remember this when I have bridal showers to go to.

Thanks! I was nervous it wouldn't go together quickly enough - I'm never good at predicting how much time something will take - but it really went together very quickly. I think it took a few hours, which is pretty quick for me. Not sure about anyone else in the world.

Love the aprons, may have to try one sometime.
Also have to comment on your pink (Royal Quiet Deluxe?) typewriter, is that yours? I have a turquoise one! It's so much fun to use

Great job! I really loved how these turned out. I especially like the bias tape detail.
My grandmother used to make aprons like that, and it seems like everyone who was anyone in her life got one at some point. It's nice to see someone else carrying on the tradition!

Speuterfreak, nope, the one in the icon isn't mine, but I do have one that looks almost exactly like it. The one I have is an electric, though, a big ol' bertha of a machine. It would work fine if I could figure out how to get the carriage return to stay put when I move it back over. Turquoise! I want! I saw a red one the other day online and I was like :O!!!!! I WANT THAT!
Salexish: they're so much handier! I always spill up top, so this is way more useful to me than a half-apron, and the usual sort of A-shaped ones that are most common these days just aren't comfy for me. Plus they still don't really cover where I usually spill stuff, so. I think this might be my new I-can't-think-of-anything gift.

I love both of the aprons, they remind me of the ones I used to play with at my Great grandma's! Has anyone told you, you look like Camryn Manheim? I just love her

Aww, no, I don't think anyone's ever told me that! Thank you! I love her. Have you ever read her book, Wake Up, I'm Fat? That was what made me think she was really awesome.
