My boyfriend and I just moved into our first house and we have a cat that can't roam free (she goes outside the box-I've seen the vet several times and we've determined it's behavioral), so currently she lives in an extra large pet taxi. Well, this doesn't give her a whole lot of room for moving around, so we (and by we I mean-I designed, he built) built her her own kitty condo! It's 5 feet tall, 4 feet wide, and almost 3 feet deep. It has three levels-the top is for sleeping, the middle is for eating, and the bottom is for bathroom duties. We carpeted parts of it, as well as added some stickdown tile for the other parts. Everything can be replaced if need be (but hopefully she'll use each room properly!).

She is still living at my mom's house, but we should be getting her back tomorrow, so maybe then, I'll post some live action shots, but until then, here is the completed (unfurnished) condo.

We are both so very proud of this house we built her-I almost like it better than my own!  Smiley

That is so nice! It's good of you to make her a big place where she can still roam around and have some room. So many people get rid of their cats when they have potty problems, which I understand, but it's so nice that you made her place of her own where she can't cause any damage and still has a decent amount of freedom.

Your poor baby! I'm glad you found a way you can keep her and everyone can be happy! My kitty goes outside the box, too. I've found that she is just very particular about her litter box. I have to use a certain brand of litter, the box cannot have a lid, and I have to keep it VERY clean (several times a day scooped) or she will not use it. But at least when she goes outside of it, she picks something washable to go on (instead of just on the carpet or something...) Anyway, very creative solution! I hope the kitty loves it!

I think it is very sweet that you went to all that trouble to accommodate to the needs of your troubled kitty. It looks like a home she can enjoy.

I'll be honest, I had thoughts about giving her up-my mom's downstairs is ruined, but I just couldn't do it. After I put her in the taxi, she was using the box, I guess because she now didn't have much room. I'm hoping that she will continue to use the box even though she has more space now. She has particular litter wants as well-she always gets the same brand and it's scooped daily (my other cats aren't this spoiled, but they use the box properly).

Her first few minutes in, she was terrified, but I think after a day or two, she'll grow to love it (I hope). I made sure to place it by a window so she can see out into the yard-I think that will really help her adjust, before she could only see the floor!

Thank you all for your kind words!

What a great idea.  Is she in her condo yet? If so how is she doing?

Yes, she is in the condo and all seems to be going well. She's using each level as she should. It only took her a few minutes to figure out how to use the ramps and stuff. We gave her a pillow on the top that she likes to bury herself under. Her favorite level is the second, because she loves to eat. And I'm most happy to report that she is using her ground level litter box room-for the litter box! There hasn't been any accidents (or purposeful peeing) on any other level.

that's awesome. one of our cats has a similar problem. we switched from one to two separate boxes for the two cats and scooping EVERY day, and all seems to be going well. i guess some cats are like people, they want to use a clean receptacle when they're doing their "business".
