Hello - I'm trying my hand at making lip balms.  I was left with a wax-coated pyrex measuring cup.  Does anyone have any tips for cleaning wax or oil coated containers?  I don't want to pour anything down the drain for fear of coating the pipes.  I'm going to be doing soap as soon as my supplies arrive, so any tips on cleaning those containers would be helpful too.  Also, what are your favorite containers to use?

Any advice is appreciated!  thank you!

Stacey

I heat those in short bursts in the microwave (maybe 5-10 sec?) just so it softens, and then wipe out with towels or paper towels. Once it's pretty much all gone and you just have a slightly oily pyrex, pour some dishwash soap in it (no water) and scrub it well. Then add your water and rinse. HTH!

Are you making melt and pour or soap with lye?

If it's melt and pour, just scrape out as much as you can (keep it to use the next time if you want or throw away) and then do as above with the microwave and wiping out. You don't need to do the dishsoap step, unless it was heavily fragranced or something  :-) just rinse and scrub and rinse after you get most of it out.

If it's cp or hp, something that had lye in it, some people let it set out a couple days, and then it is basically soap and the scrape/wash. Personally, I don't think the little bit of raw soap left in my pot is going to hurt my pipes (Hello, they sell LYE as a drain cleaner!) but someone told me if you are on a septic system it's not good for that. But I don't know if that's true.

Thank you!  That sounds like a good technique.  My husband was the one most concerned about he drain, but I thought that dishsoap should cut any little amount of grease.

I'm going to do soap with lye.  I just love handmade, natural soap, so I figured I should learn how to make it myself!  I've read a few of your posts, maremare, and they have all been very helpful.  I can't wait to start!
