Woodland Crown (now with visible images)
«
on:
July 04, 2007 01:04:58 AM »
This Crown/Tiara represents my love of nature and the outdoors. Overtime I've collected so many seeds, twigs, and even insects... I store them away in glass jars and when no one is looking I take them out to admire.
This seemed like the perfect opportunity to put them to good use
***woops I just found out I can't post pictures so here are some links to my flickr instead of photobucket images, sorry!... I don't know if I'm allowed to enter the contest either, so if not, I apologize profusely and please move this, thank you! I had a great time doing it regardless
***
((EDIT)) OK I think I can post pictures now.. attempting! thank you )
Three fourths view
front view
And a closer up
and... a very silly one on the head, I wish it was a better shot, I didn't have much success with the self portrait!
And an in progress:
The base is actually this wood veneer "tape" I had laying around from another project. The roots are from a dwarf pomegranite I had that sadly died, as are the twigs. I glued some of those propeller seeds to be winglike and of course the bigger ones on the front and in the back. It has a little bit of pearlized paint in areas that did not come through in the pictures along with glitter. It fits on the head over a bun and helps stay put with some bands connected to bobby-pins.
This was so so much fun to do and I'm really glad that there was this contest to inspire me. I just feel so happy to have made something with the things that mean so much to me
I hope you like it and I am really enjoying seeing everyone's awesome designs!

Very nice. And you're definitely allowed in the challenge! You just have to post ten times before you can post your photos directly (because there were some spammer issues). A moderator will probably come through and turn your links into image tags for you, or you can do it yourself if you post three more times. Welcome to Craftster!

You should change your name to Titania! Only she would were a crown so gorgeous.
All hail the Queen of the Fairies!
I know a bank where the wild thyme blows,
Where oxlips and the nodding violet grows,
Quite over-canopied with luscious woodbine,
With sweet musk-roses and with eglantine:
There sleeps Titania sometime of the night,
Lull'd in these flowers with dances and delight;
And there the snake throws her enamell'd skin,
Weed wide enough to wrap a fairy in

Oh my gosh thank you so much!
I found most of it except of course the wood veneer tape, wire, hemp cord, and beads.
I can't tell you how much fun I had making this, the hardest part was having the patience to let the glue dry at times
I should be able to post images soon I didn't even think of just meeting the 10 post minimum, it was a bit late!
thank you so much

I really like your crown. I especially like the bugg at the top. The heart in the middle is a really cute touch also.

You guys have made me feel so happy, seriously there doesn't need to be a contest, I'm just so happy that you like it!
The bug on top is an old Cicada shell, they shed them all over and I tend to hoard them when I find them around the yard. Although I had left this years batch on the window sill and our un-Texas like rains did away with them
So that one is about 4 years old or so.
The winglike appendages on the crown are very delicate, I had broke a few and had to replace them already, I'm wondering if there is a way to make it a bit sturdier... maybe a clear coating? (fresher seeds would work too)
Not sure what I'm going to do with it yet, at the moment I am going to get a clear box to display it in before my cats eat it (oh and they want to!)
I'm glad to hear there are many others who have collections of "bits and bobs" from nature

I've heard of some crafter's using some sort of clear spray that's found at craft stores to coat wreath's with during holiday season. May want to look into that, maybe it'll make it more sturdy.

Wow! Love the cicada shell! I also like to collect twigs, insect exoskeletons, seashells, etc. You're giving me a great idea for a "natural ephemera" swap!! I would put it in a display box on the the wall, definitely.

Oh, wow. First, I LOVE it that you made it out of found objects. Second, it was "crafted" but it really looks like a piece of usable art (an idea that I am interested in). You can tell that you took time figuring out the design.
This vote's for you!
Oh... well, the banner about this craft challenge was misleading as I didn't realize that voting had closed the 13th. Well, this vote
would
have been for you.
