http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=180658.0
So many BRILLIANT choices! It will be hard to pick one!

8/1/07 - Time to post your entries y'all! Click below for the board where the entries go:
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?board=371.0

A fellow Craftster told me about a brilliant project called morsbags sociable guerilla bagging where people get together and make cloth reusable shopping bags for themselves and to hand out to others. I thought that this would make for a really fun challenge! And since I have a great stenciling-themed prize to give away this month, I'm combining the two into this challenge!

So your challenge is to create a kick-ass reusable grocery bag and stencil it with an eco-friendly statement or decorate it some how with an environmentally-friendly theme.

At the end, we can all vote for our favorite bag. But also-- we can tally up the number of bags made and add it to morsbag's tally which has a calculation telling you how many disposable plastic bags your cloth bag will have displaced!

The pattern (or lack of pattern!) you use for sewing your bag is totally up to you. Maybe you'll invent a new style of bag that's more ideal for grocery shopping that anything out there! Here are some more ideas for how to sew your bag...
-- morsbags.com has a great animated tutorial here
-- jMi, the handbags moderator, has compiled a list of bag tutorials here
-- queenofdiy has posted an awesome new tutorial for a shopping bag which folds up into it's own pocket here

(If you are totally not into sewing, you can start with a pre-made totebag but you are encouraged to try sewing your own. You can also make your bag using some other method but just be sure that you decorate it with some eco-friendly theme.)

Official Rules:

  • Post your craft during the period of August 1 - August 5 2007. No sooner. No later. On August 1 there will be a special folder created for entries.
  • Voting will happen from August 6 - August 12 2007.
  • Each participant can enter ONE project although there can be multiple parts to you project.

Originality:

It's probably impossible to know whether your project is 100% original and has never been posted on Craftster or made by anyone else in the past.  But if your project was definitely inspired by something you've seen before, then just give credit to that project.

Prizes:

At the end, I'll set up a poll right here and the first prize winner will get:

(1) their project in the Featured Projects area
(2) their project in the Craftster Blog

And a this prize...

Please note this prize consists of aerosol cans of paint and due to shipping restrictions you can only receive this prize if you live in the contiguous 48 U.S. states. So if you live elsewhere and you win this challenge, I will heap upon you a nice big pile of Craftster swag like t-shirts, buttons, etc. instead.

Simply Spray has generously donated $250 worth fabric paint! Simply Spray is the only permanent aerosol fabric paint that is totally non-toxic and easy to use. You can use for all kinds of projects. They even have a version that allows you to dye your couch a whole different color! Check out their project gallery and videos showing what you can do with it!

okay, i technically cant use mine when i go to the store (i shop at Sam's club, a family of 6 adults isnt easy to feed) but i can use it when there are quick trips to the super market and such....plus, i love sewing, yay...okay off to make bags! woo my first challenge like thing

does it have to be a singlet style bag like queenofdiy's or can ir just be a tote bag? im only asking because im not so much with the patterns...but i can whip up a purse like it was going out of style...

MissDisney - I think you're safe doing any kind of bag you feel drawn to. The link to the tutorial list is pretty comprehensive, and totes were on there.

Great challenge idea. Can't wait to see!

I have a couple of these http://www.envirosax.com/ and I looooove them. The fabric is so pretty and they roll up really small when you're not using them. Some day I hope to have time to try my hand at making a few more of these bags! Smiley

I always plan on entering these challenges, but then never do, and I am afraid that will be the case with this one too! As I don't know how much sewing machine access I will have this month. But I love the challenge and I love the idea. Not only is it creative, but encouraging people to use their own grocery bags! Yeah!
