i have to cast on stitches at the beginning of a row for mesilla sweater from knitty.com

here's an excerpt:

CO 3 sts at beg of next 2 rows.

CO 4[4, 5, 5, 5, 5, 5] sts at beg of next 2 rows. 118[126, 134, 142, 150, 156, 164] sts.

so.. do i use a backwards loop cast on method? i tried this and when i went to purl into it it got all weird and there was a long strand between my needles. is this just because I'm a beginner?

thanks, and sorry for such a (probably) simple/stupid question Cheesy

I would suggest the cable cast on method.  It's pretty simple and isn't quite as loose as the backward loop.  Check out the video for it on this page (scroll down a bit).

I hope that works out.  I love knittinghelp.com.  Always helpful when you are sitting there staring blankly at your needles.   Cheesy

i think it worked! it took a while (actually the beginning of the video confused me when she brought the yarn to the front- so i may be doing it wrong, but i just read the written directions and then looked at the rest of the video)

i had put down this sweater for a week or two because i was dreading this part.

thanks again!

Yay!  I'm so glad that worked for you.  Post a pic of the sweater when you're done....   Grin

Another reason to wind it up as you rip it out....

yeah, but there was no ripping involved this time. i just put the project down for a week or two in a bag with all the yarn, and the yarn on the skein i was working with turned evil and twisted and tangled itself up.

Ahhh, that can easily happen. Just be patient and don't pull tight - makes it worse.
