I used to make these in the early 80's. I worked at a large craft store and we had directions...but I could not find them to respond to a post. I did find one I finished and a few barely started so I finished and here they are.

The next image is materials, except glue  I used hot melt glue gun but a thick tacky craft glue will work  Pull the petals off the pine cone with needle nose pliers- if they are jagged at the end just trim them straight with scissors

For the hair combs and barrette without feathers
Cut a piece of felt the size of your barrette.and glue it on.
Glue one petal to each end of the barrette.
Glue the next petals so that they overlap the first (last picture shows start) working to the center
Glue one petal facing up, and one facing down over the space where the two sides meet- trim to fit if necessary
Glue a bead in the center where the four petals come together.
The narrow one in the top of the picture also has tiny seashells, but they are hard to see

For barrette with feathers
As before glue one petal onto each end. Only this time glue the next one facing up.
Glue five or six feathers on the space between these petal ends.
To cover the glue spot that happens when you glue feathers I glued a tiny pinecone (I cut the bottom a bit with wire cutters to make it flatter)
in the center. Fill in between this center cone and the end with more petals.
Glue one larger pinecone petal under the tiny come so it hangs down- then glue a feather to each side of the tiny cone

For the magnet or pin cut felt the shape of your magnet or pin (mine was round)
Start by gluing four larger pinecone petals so the ends meet in the center of the circle (see photo)
glue feathers on top of the center of this cross shape so they fill the empty spaces between petals.
Using smaller pinecone petals repeat the four petal shape on top of the feathers
Glue on a smaller pinecone for the flower center.

I think the book with directions was called Pinecone Pretties' and If I had to guess I'd say plaid published it, as they were the crafty publishers to be back then- so if anyone knows and would like to add facts, feel free Cheesy

My ex used to hunt duck, pheasant and quail. The feathers are so beautiful that I saved all I could get. You are right, the ones at the store pale in comparison- and since he is an ex my supply can't be replenished anymore so soon I will also be buying the second raters... Sigh.

very cool!  I live in the woods with my flock of exotic chickens ( oh.. and my family.. I nearly forgot!  Cheesy ) .. I can feel some feather/ pinecone accessories coming on!

Maybe I am old and out of touch... do people wear feathers anymore?

I know I do.. but usually it is when I find a gift left by one of my Roosters (feather!)  and I stick it in my hair while I gather eggs.....

Great tut.. thankee!
