thanks!  the frosting thing is a cool idea - i might try frosting on some hair and eyes or something.  that way you still get a good amount of light, but would be able to see it a bit better.  it's much more recognizable in person, but i bet frosting would look great!  can't wait to see it.

HA! This is tooo funny, because I seriously had a veryyy similar idea! I just started working at Pier 1 and saw those glass heads, and then thought to myself... "AWESOME LAMP PROJECT!!!" Hehe. I was actually going to  make a wood base with the lightbulb attached, and then sit the head ontop on the base with the light in the center....

AND YES! THEY ARE STILL AVAILABLE!! we have tons of them!!!  There is also the annual summer sale going on, which ends July 24th... I can't remember if they are on sale, but I am 90% certain that they are.  I work tomorrow so I'll check it out....

My dad got one of those in blue a few years ago- I never thought they were being mass produced for Pier 1.
Aside from my shock that these heads are now everywhere, I am in love with your lamp idea.  It's so cool.

I love the glass heads!  Last year for Christmas, I decorated my office by stuffing a string of multi-colored, flashing Christmas lights and silver tinsel up inside the head and then topped it with a Santa Claus hat.  This sat proudly on my second story window sill until after Epiphany.

I feed my soul with the stitches I sew.
