Tutorial: CUTE TRI-FOLD WALLET W/ INSTRUCTIONS

Hi!  This is my very first post on Craftster, although I've been coming here for months.  I usually make purses and bags, but I decided to try creating a wallet on a whim.  There may be an easier way to do this.  I don't know.  Hopefully this will help someone out who wants to take a stab at making their own wallet.  Let me know if you have any questions or advice!

+ I began with two different pieces of fabric--the pink/green floral and the green canvas.  I cut the rectangles exactly 4 x 12 (since this is a tri-fold, it's easier to choose a length dimension that's divisible by 3).  

+ Next, I set the floral piece (which is the outside fabric) aside.  You won't need the exterior fabric until the end.  The plain, green canvas piece is actually where I sewed the pockets.  

+ You may have to use your own discretion when addressing the inner pockets.  Since my original dimensions were 4 x 12, I cut the right-hand pockets about 4 x 3 and 4 x 2.  I cut the money pocket 4 x 8, respectively.  Play around with what fits and what looks nice.  

+ The pink lines around the tops and edges of the inner pockets are actually ribbon.  This works very, very well.  It hides the imperfect edges and seems, plus it makes the wallet more attractive.  You can certainly add more to the inside at this point.

+ Following the completion of the pocket interior, I placed the interior and the exterior (remember...that other piece I set aside earlier) together--good sides, of course.  Then I sewed around the perimeter, leaving the left-hand side open (the side next to the money pocket).  Think of this step as though you are making a pillow.

+ Flip the "pillow" and press.  To finish, I sewed the same pink ribbon around the opening and added a cute bow.

How does the wallet close? is there a clasp? and where does your change go? It's hard to tell from the photos if there's a coin area by the credit cards or not...

I actually didn't use a closure on this one.  I meant to, but at the time I was more concerned with actually making the "prototype" for other wallets.  LOL.  I was going to use velcro, though. 

No, I didn't make a coin area.  Sorry about the photos being ambiguous.  You could certainly add a coin area, though.  I probably will on my next wallet.
