does anyone have any suggestions for getting a good red color using wilton dyes?  so far the best i've been able to get is a sort of bright pinkish.  or would another type of dye be better to get a real red color?  i'm dyeing roving, if it matters.

I haven't tried this personally, but I've heard that the "no taste red" is the only one that gives a good color.  I use acid dyes (jacquard) and I've always gotten a really true red.

Wiltons will not give you a really bright red, the maroon comes closer to true red but it is dark and a bit purpleish, I've only had success with Jaquard Acid dye and RIT dye for true red, you may want to try a very thick mixture of cherry kool-aid like 4 packets to each cup of water but I make no promises with this method.
