Sweet pea shawl 202 ch question!

I want to start this project but I found in my LYS a cool cotton yarn a bit thinner then the one suggested in the book (110m instead of 85m), I work it with a 3 mm,  how should I increase the 202 fnd ch without making a mess???

I'd do a gauge swatch first, and compare that to the recommended gauge to figure out how many extra shells you need to start with.

Hi,

It's a "10 + 2" pattern meaning that every shell takes up 10 chains PLUS 1 extra chain at the end (to complete the last shell) PLUS 1 extra chain for the turning chain.

If you look at the original base chain (202), you'll see that it fits the math:

20 shells x 10 chains = 200 + 1(end of last shell) + 1(turning chain) = 202

As Rina said, make a gauge swatch and measure how wide a shell is in that new yarn. Let's pretend that the shell is 1" wide and you want a shawl that's about 58" wide (which is what the pattern calls for). That means you'd want 58 shells across. Just stick the new number in the formula:

58 shells x 10 chains = 580 + 1(end of last shell) + 1(turning chain) = 582

Does that make sense?
