I recently joined a lil "challenge" that is "Use What You Have" -- so I'm going through trying to reduce the ... ah ... morbidly obese size of my fabric collection (I'm not looking at the yarn collection yet!) and decided I would use up a bunch of it making Overnight Sets for my dauther and 2 neices ... tote bag, sleeping mat, etc.

So ... long introduction to say that yay! I've completed my first ever tote bag! I don't know why I was so scared of trying it before now - I may be addicted!

thank you! I'm still admiring it ... it's like a desktop decoration at the moment because I'm so pleased - it's literally the 2nd thing I've ever made on my new sewing maching and the first tote so ... yup I'm gushing.

it's lovely!

Is that a pocket in the front?  How did you get it in there?

Thanks! And yup, it is .... the way I got it in there was to make a band that attaches to the bag itself ... and then 4 pockets. So I sewed 1 pocket to each band (there's pockets on both sides), and 1 pocket to each side of the bag, and then sewed the band to the bag, going all around the pocket. Does that make sense?

No.  LOL

I've been trying to figure out how to make pockets at seams for a month now and every solution I come up with leaves gaps at the top or makes one side of the pocket baggy.

So, let me see if I understand this.

You make a pocket and sew it to a band of fabric then sew the band of fabric to the seam.  When you sew it to the seam, doesn't the front of the pocket get sewn shut?

Let me play in Photoshop for a few minutes and I'll see if I can't develop a visual way of explaining this Smiley
