This is really gorgeous and I am thinking about making one for my high school graduation, but I've just started sewing so I have a couple questions.
You said this pattern hit you at the knee, and I'm about 5'10" soo, I should probably make it super long right? I'm sure I could measure how long it should be and then measure the pattern and add some, but I was just wondering how much more fabric I should buy.
Also, you said you wear a 16/18 in ready to wear. Is that just like normal size clothes? I don't really understand pattern sizes. lol
Thanks so much for this post, it's really great!

Hello and thanks! That Simplicity pattern actually comes in two lengths, so you may do fine with the longer version, depending on where you want it to hit. If it's too short, you can just extend it -- there is usually a lengthen/shorten line on the pattern (although I don't remember with this one). The body of the dress is cut along the length of the fabric, so that's how you'd know how much extra. If you need the dress to be 6" longer, you'd need 6" more fabric (yardage). Read the pattern envelope carefully! Use those measurements, and you may find the longer version okay for what you want.

When people say "ready to wear" what they are talking about is store-bought. Pattern sizes may be a number you aren't expecting, but the actual measurements will be on the pattern envelope. Much more consistent than store-bought clothes! I have everything from M to 3X in my closet, which is ridiculous.

It's an easy dress and shouldn't cause much trouble for a new stitcher. Good luck!

This is just awesome!  I love the fabric, and I love how you lined the jacket sleeves with it too.

Will you be adding pictures with you wearing it?  I'd love to see an action shot!

I really should. I mean, I'm pretty proud of the dress... I'm just preternaturally camera-shy. This summer maybe!
