Has anyone tried the cotton balls dipped in vaseline?  I've often seen this listed as a good fire starter but ... I dunno...seems kinda messy.

yes !yes! yes!!!vaseline is a petroleum product so it helps the cotton burn--not all that messy Kiss
You know what works even better?  a battery & fine steel wool--
pull a smallish piece of  wool out into a thin ribbon touch each end of the "ribbon" to an end of a battery & ****fire**** have your kindling ready it's quick!!!! this works great in the winter

Just a regular battery?  I've never heard of this method!  Wow.  We could have crafted up a whole firestarter kit.

yup just regular batteries-- AA-C the kind with  - & + ends
the steel wool kind of sparks & starts to burn it works very fast
even works with "dead" battries
& how many of us carry a camera,GPS or flashlight  with battries just add the steel wool to your survival  kit & you got fire!!!

ever used burnt jeans as tinder?
with the head of a match & a piece of wire -- very involved & totally not worth it -- like using a bow & drill or knife over a rock to get sparks --pain in the butt
they do work with practice but what a pain!!! Give me steel wool any day
Ok yes I have done survival camping  Roll Eyes

I just came home and opened the most wonderful package from moilulu!

I am beyond thrilled with everything that she made.  Moilulu, thank you so much.  What fantastic surprises.  You are super talented.

I will post pics later tonight.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Linzo for a faboulous first swap!!  Cheesy

Here are the goods:
Group shot with sun jar, hankercheif with campfire on it, beautiful yarn, and game board (underneath the yarn) with pockets for pencil, scoring paper and cards.

Closeup on the hankercheif:

Sun jar, what a fabulous idea:

So I guess the jar stays in the sunlight by day and glows at night.  It is staying in front of my window until it gets dark.  I can't wait to see it in the dark.

Thank you again Linzo.
