I made this necklace from some surplus buttons - they're threaded on very fine pliable florist's wire (I think silver wire would work even better, since it's less friable).  It hasn't got a proper clasp on it because I just made it as an experiment for myself, and I'm too cheap to fork out for clasps for myself.  I think I might break it up and restring it, with a proper clasp... what do you think - worth the effort?

You should totally do a clasp on it!  I really want to make a button necklace, can you tell me how you did this?

As I said, I just used thin wire.  I used buttons with two or four holes in.  The wire comes up through one hole, and down through the other - the two layers of buttons are "back-to-back" and overlap slightly: like so
   /\         /\         /
 ====    ====    ====    ====    ====
       ====    ====    ====    ====    ====
          \/        \/

(the "v"s are meant to be loops of wire, and the / is the free end of the wire - the ==== "buttons" on the right haven't been wired yet.  The wire should actually be pulled tight and lie flat - I just put the loops in so you can see them)

Thanks - since making it I've realised I wasn't the only person to think of it.  I still quite like it though - I made an all-white one for my mother, which she wore when she last took me out for dinner.  A woman at an adjacent table came up to her to ask her where she'd gotten it - my mother (more canny than I) said I'd made it, and offered to sell her it for 10!  So I was able to buy dinner Smiley

Estimating from the photo, about 105... I wouldn't go out and buy buttons especially for this project!  However, there are often boxes of odd buttons for sale at markets and car boot fairs, so you might profit from that (that's how I got these... I can never resist a box of buttons!)
