so i recently tried my hand at an altered book for my boyfriend.  needless to say, it's a lot more difficult than i thought it would be.  i started working on it sometime in august, and i wanted to have it done for our anniversary at the end of september.  hmph.  it's still sitting on a shelf in the kitchen, waiting for me to do more things to it.

anyway, i thought it would be cool to see some other altered books.  maybe that will get me motivated.  so show me!

Wow, that is a good link. I like the idea of an altered book. I want to know more. Do you know any how-to sites with good pictures? Anyone?

While not a how-to site per se, this artist describes how she developed each piece, with good information:

Also, if you join the alteredbooks Yahoo! Group, you'll find that their files are filled with how-to instructions (though not with pictures). A TON of information.

More help, including an article about getting started:

Not so many pictures, but maybe something on these pages will help.

I've tried my hand at altered books... while they looked fun/funky, they take a ton of energy so I lost interest.  I still  think they're fun to look at and one of my favorite artists is Karen Michel.  http://www.karenmichel.com/  I recently bought the first edition of my new favorite craft magazine (Cloth, Paper, Scissors) and Karen was one of the featured artists.  She did an incredible tutorial of how to make altered photos (I posted pics of some photos I've altered last month).

Here's another good site.   http://www.alteredbookartists.com/

I forgot to add that I have some of my own altered books online, too, at:

http://www.alixnorth.com/Gallery/alteredbooks.html

Of course, I tend to either cover up the pages completely or rip out the guts of the hardcover and stitch in new pages. So, perhaps that makes them more "art books" than "altered books" ... not sure if it matters for you.
