I dont get it...you can be put on a list, but if you get invited you can sign up right away? Once the site "opens",which I don't see in the near future, is anyone free to join?

Right now the site is in beta testing and usually only a few people are invited to use the site. There were so many people who wanted in , they decided to make a waiting list. thats what's everyone is talking about. the list is about 18000 people right now. they are inviting as many people as possible before the site opens to the public but theres no set date for that yet. When it is open, anyone can join.

bruisedpeach is right  Smiley

Instead of opening the site to everyone all at once and probably causing a lot of problems with the site slowing down/crashing, the Ravelry people decided to gradually invite people (a few hundred a day right now, more as the site gets going better), on a first come first served basis.

If you put your name on the waiting list, you'll be put "in line", and will be invited after all the people who signed up before you are.

There are still a lot of things with Ravelry that are buggy/not working quite right, so you'll probably have a better first impression than a lot of us did.  I know when I first signed up things were pretty confusing.

Well i've succumbed to the curiosity and am now tracking my place in line everyday. Only 20 more days if this rate keeps up!!! Anyone have an idea when they are going to open to the public? I'd read the blog but there hasn't been a guess for quite sometime.

I completely understand! Adding 18 thousand people at once would be insane LOL! I actually added myself to the list a little less than a month ago, before I knew about this topic or the possibility of invites. Im happy waiting for the perfected product Smiley

They said once they are finished upgrading the servers they'll start inviting about 2,000 people per day.  I'm assuming the "public" opening will be when they get to the end of the waiting list.

"You guys may have noticed that we are sending out 2-3x as many invites now that we have the new servers. It's exciting!"

That's all I know so far.   Smiley

Ohh .. if they send out 2,000 invites a day then it won't be *too* long!  I can't wait!  'cause I need something else to cut into my crafting time ...

Psst, I've come up with a great way to keep up with Ravelry without cutting in to my knitting time - it's called reading at work! Don't tell me boss, though  Wink

College students can read Ravelry instead of going to class! High-schoolers: Try skipping meals for a few extra minutes to surf Ravelry.  Grin
