UPDATE:  I've blogged about this, with more pictures:

Sorry all of the pictures of the FO are so dark, but that darn Indigo yarn my husband wanted is hard to light!

I made my first cable project using Jillian's Connemara Scarf pattern from sknitty.typepad.com:

http://sknitty.typepad.com/Connemara.pdf

It was a little frustrating to a beginner like me because I'm still figuring out how to follow a pattern and ended up frogging the beginning part a couple of times.  But once I figured out how to pick up the right number of stitches from the end, it was fine.

I'll blog about the process when I have time, but here's a picture.  I made it in Debbie Bliss Cashmerino Chunky in Indigo, so you can't see the pattern as well as I'd like, but the braided cable look is pretty cool in person.

My husband modeling the scarf -- can you tell he doesn't like having his picture taken?

Cables are ridiculously easy!  I can't believe I was so scared of them.

I was mostly having trouble getting the ends to be the right length -- I think I made at least three versions, because the first one was too short to pick up the right number of stitches, and the final one was too wide (even though I was pretty sure it had the same number of stitches as the one that was already attached) so I had to fix that in blocking.
