Ooooh, CocoRosie would work beautifully as a music box. You can sometimes find little 128mb or 256mb mp3 players for pretty cheap, but I quite like the lo-fi-ness of the tape idea, it seems more in keeping somehow... I hope you'll post the finished project!

Do you know the French musician Colleen? She recorded an EP (Colleen et les Botes Musique) using the sounds from old music boxes, it would be satisfyingly circular to put some of that music into a music box.

Oh dreamergirl, no offense was taken. I just wanted to defend the "girls can do anything" idea (especially craftsters!) and encourage you not to feel you needed to avoid electronics shops. I've never been treated badly in an electronics shop, but should you encounter twerps who make gender-based assumptions, certainly follow tipassoi's advice and go elsewhere.

I'm a marine geophysicist. My background is physics.

I think your idea is really interesting. My boyfriend's a musician so I'm following the thread for gift ideas.  Grin I once made him a theramin. (And I think he'd be thrilled to hear Colleen et les Botes Musique).

I opened an Etsy shop! Come visit http://minouette.etsy.com
