I actually just registered so I could ask you a question about your most awesome coasters!  I'm craft-challenged and I was wondering what exactly you bought when you went to Lowes to get "acrylic stuff"?  Thanks in advance!

Ha! Awesome! My cousin is an absolute hi-tech junkie and he would LOVE these! I've never used acrylics before. What kind would I need and where can I get me some??? lol  Oh yeah, good job!

These really are cool.  I am trying to think of exciting crochet/knitting things to put in them so I can remind my friends what I make - and like the others think they'd make great presents.  What a good idea, well done!!

WOW. Not too bad. 2 pages worth of comments in one evening. These must be better than I thought. As for what I used, the stuff is called Glaze Coat (By Famowood) purchased from Lowe's. This stuff is actually Epoxy Coating, not clear acrylic as previously stated. My bad. I found it by the stains and varnishes. The guy working there said it had a slight yellowish tent to it, but that was wrong. This stuff is crystal clear which corresponds to the label on the box which says "crystal clear". lol. It comes as a 2 part liquid. Just measure equal amounts of both, stir till the cloudiness goes away, and pour. They say not to pour it too thick, but that is rubbish. I poured my coasters and some are 1/2 inch thick and by the morning they were hard as morning wood. lol. I have some more ideas brewing for this stuff. Like I said, the possibilities are endless.

A few more questions..... 

How did the acrylic not bond to the plastic cases you used for molds? Did you have to lubricate them? What kind of plastic are those cases? Like tupperware plastic or milk jug plastic, or ice tray plastic? Could you use those rubber cake and cupcake molds that are really flexible?

I work with teenage boys in a group home and I'm always looking for art projects to do with them that they would enjoy.(My usual craft skills are pretty traditionally girly.) I think this would be an awesome weekend project for us.
