I have a college Fibers class, and will be using a huge floor loom for the first time. I understand the basic principles, but we have to find patterns to weave on the loom.

The problem is, I will be making a scarf and I have no idea what pattern to use! Tweed? Basic over-under? What stretches? What gives a "fluffy" effect? What stretches enough to hold up to wear and tear?

Any takers?

It's been almost a year and no responses.  How sad.  Embarrassed

I just got a loom today.  On long term loan out of an acquaintance's barn.  I don't know anything about it and it appears to be missing parts.  The adventure begins!

This thread got un-earthed when weaving got its own board earlier this summer. . .So, all us crazy weavers have been posting in the rest of the new board.

What kind of loom are you fixing up?  I'm working on a 4 harness counterbalance that a local man built in the 40's.

Wow, glad ya'll are trying to get started also!

I just discovered a table loom in a box of items my sister dropped off for donation.

The loom stayed with me  Wink  - Now i need to figure it out.

Is it hard to set up?  Can I figure it out without outside help?

Cloverdragon:  What kind of weaving do you want to do; what do you want to make?  That'll determine, to a certain extent, the appropriate loom.

Linny_Austin:  Do you know what kind of loom it is? (For example, simple frame, rigid heddle, or multi-harness--if these words don't make sense, can you describe the loom in question?)

I looked through the weaving board more. I think I would really like to get a table loom. Just one of the little ones. Any ideas where i can get one? I looked on kidsurplus.com and on ebay and they had some, but i'd like to compare to others... any other ideas?

Cloverdragon,
When you say table loom, what kind are you thinking about?  (A link to an example may be helpful.)  Otherwise, off the top of my head, I'd say, check the Spinner's & Weaver's Housecleaning Pages:
http://together.net/~kbruce/kbbspin.html

You could also check with a local weaving guild such as those listed here (for Michigan--I took a quick look at your profile):
http://www.textilelinks.com/guild/mi.html
The guilds may have their own set of classifieds or know of items in your area, thus saving you some shipping costs.  Plus, they'd know of any local classes or supply places.

Linny_Austin,

You may be able to find some local help, should you need it from the Weavers and Spinners Society of Austin:
http://www.wssaustin.org/

(PS  I'm originally from the Houston area with lots of family in the greater Austin area.)

I just joined craftster and am pretty excited about much I'm learning already... I have a little bitty loom I've been using to figure out the basics (not quite big enough to do placemats, as I discovered while trying to make christmas presents...). Hopefully I'll have something worth posting about soon, but I'm glad this is here so I can see what everyone else is up to.
