Spinning machine! whoa...  Shocked

This is a really good week for yarn - I'm loving this thread! I'm having major bunny envy. I want an angora too! Where do you all get yours? I see petfinder. Any other places?

I'll second the strauch petite drum carder making 1 oz batts. I'm too scared to go further as well. But 1 oz batts are cool too.  Smiley  Sometimes I make two and roll them up together after, for a bigger batt.

I have two more photos of it from different angles, but I just didn't want to overload this already pic-heavy thread!

Thanks for the compliments!

rubysdaughter, ednathewitch, can I just say? Damn, I wish my singles came out that consistent!

I was thinking the same thing! How long have y'all been spinning? Do you have any 'secret tricks' for us beginners?

I've given up on "pre-drafting" because I find it slow & it really cuts into my spinning time. I just split the roving into smaller and smaller strips until it's close to the thickness I want for the single. This cuts down on the amount of drafting you have to do while spinning and, for me, leads to more uniform singles since I don't have to really think about drafting.

Divide your roving into roughly the same size strips & you'll end up spinning roughly the same consistency single. I pull a length of roving into 6 or more strips because I lean toward spinning a finer yarn.

I'm a self taught spinner and have been spinning for about 2 years now.   I guess I do a short draw method of spinning (at least that's what I've been told).  Since I never took a class it's just what feels right to me.  I can control the width of the fiber going on the bobbin by using my finger-pinch.  Some fibers are easier to spin consistent singles out of than others.  BFL and Silk are waaaay easier for me than Merino.  I usually end up plying merino to account for the slight irregularities.  I agree with ednathewitch that if you strip your roving or batts prior to spinning it is much easier to control.  I like to do that especially if I want a self striping single.

I tried not pre-drafting for a while.  But I've found that forcing myself to sit down and pre-draft helps with my consistency alot.  I tend to sit and pre draft on the couch while watching tv with my hubby at night  and then I actually spin things up on my day off when he's not home.
