I really wish I'd taken a before picture of this-- I thought I had, but I can' t seem to find it anywhere on my PC. But picture a thrifted skirt that, while made out of lovely fabric, has a wide, elastic-waist yoke and pleats all around, in a rather frumpy sort of way.

This was how it ended up. My inspiration was this dress that Kiera Knightley wore in the more recent version of Pride and Prejudice, though I didn't have enough fabric to do the lower waist so I had to stick with empire.

And this is a closeup of the beading, before I sewed the band down--as it turned out, some of the beads my best friend brought back from Africa for me last summer matched perfectly.

That's gorgeous.  Did you use a pattern or wing it?

Sorry it took me so long to reply! I haven't been on Craftster for a couple weeks.

roquemoma- a little bit of both. I used a pattern (can't remember the number off the top of my head but it's Simplicity) with an empire waist that I knew fit. Then I altered the bodice to do the overlap.

winniethepoohbear--since most of it was based off a commercial pattern, I can't really do a full-blown tut. But I'll see if I can get the bodice, at least.

Admittedly, it does need a little tweaking. I think I need to add a hook and eye, because the top layer has a tendency to ride down a bit.

Thank you for the kind words!

I love it!  I think the beading is a great touch.
