So, this is my entry.

I've been into conservation issues for almost 15 years, so, considering I'm a number of years away from 30, that's a significant portion of my life.  Because of that I wanted to make an animal that went extinct since the last ice age and because of human beings.  I love birds, so I looked into birds first.  The auk has a great shape and beautiful yet awkward look.  It's also reasonable simplistic color and shape wise so I knew I could do it without getting frustrated and giving up.  Roll Eyes  It also gave me a chance to work out this polyclay/felt thing I've been wanting to try.

Great Auk

I based him off of the following picture and the mounted specimen at the museum I work at.

He's black and white felt, a polymer clay beak and plastic eyes.  He is about a foot and a half tall, his head hits right above my knees.  He's also a good snuggler, despite that beak.

Next to my computer monitor

Here he is posing with the museum's mounted specimen.  I didn't intend it this way but he's actually slightly bigger than life size!

They do!  They weren't related but they look similar.  They were related to things like puffins.

Yea, I'm not quite that good!  I noticed that was an odd picture placement, too.  I'll try to fix it tomorrow when I add more pictures.  Smiley
