Short version of a long story- About two years ago I was given a huge amount of fabric by a very nice woman who maybe had a teensy little hoarding problem.  It is still in boxes (lots and lots of boxes) piled to the ceiling in the office in the apartment I live in with my boyfriend.  I have just moved all the rest of my stuff into this apartment, and we're quite short on space.
The stash must go.  At least some of it.
Would anyone be interested in a stash-busting swap where we all bust my stash?
Here's what I'm thinking:
I would make packages of fabric around certain themes.  Possibilities which spring to mind: The Goth Queen; It Came From The Seventies; I'm A Lumberjack And I'm Okay; Cuter Than A Basket Of Kittens.
Each package would have at least:
1-2 yards of one or two main fabrics.
Some smaller pieces of other fabrics.
Some ribbon, lace, buttons, slip-straps, etc.
I would post pics of these and people who joined the swap would message me with a) their preferred packages to receive, and b) their preferred packages to work with.
I would match people up and mail the packages to the participants, who would then make fabulous crafts and mail them to their partners.
Because this would involve me spending quite a bit on mailing (worth it to get the space available), I'd have to limit it to within the USA.
Obviously, in addition to the package I would mail, participants would be free to add anything they like.  You wouldn't have to use it up, either.  Just don't mail it back to me.
Anyone interested?
Ideas on how to make it work better?

That is so generous of you!!   I think I might take part in something like this.  I'd even be willing to help with shipping.

Oh yes, I'd be quite interested in partaking in this swaparoo. My only suggestion would be that you should get something out of the deal other than freeing up space. But that, my dear, is only a suggestion Cheesy

Always willing to help!

But you're too generous. Could we pay postage? Or just do a personal swap with you?

For example, you send me a box of fabric, and I'll send you a $9 stamp  Wink

I'm glad it looks like people are interested-
I'd be thrilled if people wanted to help pay postage on their packages, but I'm not sure how it would work.  I could send out info and people could mail me checks?  That would be great.
Honestly, though, I just want to reduce my stash.  It looms.  It hulks in the corner.  If it falls over, it's going to kill someone.
Also, I would be getting something from this- I'd also participate and get wonderful crafty items from some talented craftster. Smiley

Also, I forgot-
I'm out of town May 25-June 2, so I wouldn't be able to start it until I get back.  I'm just trying to get a feeling of whether there's enough interest to actually make a dent.

I would definitely be interested in this! Unlike most other crafters, I don't have a ginormous stash of fabric. *tear* But I would really like to remedy that! I would happily take anything you have to offer. (Although the goth and cuter than a bunny stuff sounds particularly interesting) I'd be up for paying the shipping costs too.  Grin

Oh, and did I mention how generous you are? I'm sure the gods smile upon you with much favor.  Wink

hey hey now!!!! that is quite an offer!!!!! how could anyone refuse?? and how convenient it is that my age- of my membership that is- will be of the thirty days required right around the time u wanna begin??? excellent!! YAY for me/us!!!!!!

and i think the only way to make the postage thing work would be to make it optional/the honor system type deal where if the receipent desires to, they may, but u arent gonna (and probably dont wanna) hunt forgettful people down to get postage dues, ya know?? and u dont wanna sit around and wait for checks before sending (getting rid of) your packages, right?? just a thought!!

You also might want to check out the ongoing "Offer What You Have" Swap. (Check in the ongoing swaps folder)

That way you could peddle off your stash, but get stuff in return, too!

Okay, there's definitely enough interest for me to start organizing a swap.  I'm going to start making groups of fabric and getting them ready now, and I'll start the signups in early June when I get back from my trip.  The crafting phase will be longer than usual, to allow time for fabric to get from me to participants.
I'll figure out how paying me back for postage will work between now and then.
I'm so excited, both to see what people make from this huge stash and to get it out of my apartment!

this is so wonderful of you! ... i have like no stash ... i love swapping, but i cant usually justify spending on materials...im sure postage would be less than the materials...and a longer than usual crafting time frame is right up my alley...i am really excited, thanks for organizing this (and being so generous)

Yes. Considering that I have less like a "stash" of fabric and more like a "small ziploc bag of scraps."

*I actually typed "stache" instead of stash. I giggled and I love mustaches.

Super excited for this one!

This definately sounds fun.  I think I will have to try and find a spot for this.  all I have to do is finish up all of my swaps and get them sent this weekend.  Shouldn't be too much of a problem as it is a holiday weekend.

I would definitly be interested in this. would the stash swap be themed or can we make anything we want? And i would also suggest using money orders and not checks for payment, (speaking from expirence from selling avon) it MUCH safer form of payment on both sides. its only like 60 more cents and it way better than the bank charges for bounced checks.

What if you sent out stuff from your stash and then people made you stuff using it?  It would be a great way to get your holiday shopping done.  all from your own stash.  You could send out a bit of fabric and a notse as to the type of item you would need for someone or something.
I don't know,

Wow, I would also love to join. And I'm certainly willing to pay postage. I tried to see if anyone mentioned this before. But you could have the option of people paying you through pay pal. And in our payment message we would of course let you know our name on craftster and that it's for this swap. And our names and addresses would appear with the payments. BUT.... it could get confusing with some people sending you checks, some maybe money orders and some using pay pal. I know it's the honor system, but you'd still like to know, right? .....I would!

Oh, lightbulb moment!

Adridne~
Why don't you pair everyone up and have the pairs craft for each other, but ALSO have everyone involved in the swap send you one of those manila envelopes full of handcrafted goodies? It seems way easier than having to worry about money orders and whatever, and it's like christmas in the middle of summer for you!

Hey, guys-
I'm in the process of making groups of fabric for the swap.
So far themes include:
Goth
Really cute
70's sheets
fabrics which are fuzzy
corduroy
stripes
heavy/upholstery fabric
browns

anyone have suggestions/requests for other bundles?  Colors?  Themes?  I could probably swing almost anything.

I expect to start the signup thread in the next couple of days.

As for sending me envelopes full of goodies... I do love the goodies, but I'm doing this with the intention of clearing space in the apartment, so it would be a little counterproductive.

How I expect shipping to work:
The post office has these wonderful Priority Mail Flat Rate boxes.  $8.95 for as much stuff as you can put in the box, shipped anywhere in the US.  I'm making packages that fit in these boxes.  I will mail them out and provide Delivery Conf. numbers.  I will ask that prople who can afford to will send me a money order for $8.95.

Does that seem fair?  Suggestions for refining this system?

I'll post here again when I do the signup thread

the system sounds fine to me!!!

and as far as other themes... i dont know what all you have, but...
solid group-obviously would be like your brown group but the other colors...like i dont know....PINK, GREEN..and so on.
"prints" group -which could be anything...paisleys, dots, tiny flowers
flowers/paisleys/dots group-assuming u have several of a print but in diff. colors
rainbow group - this could be fun! odd fabric thats of the ROYGBIV colors!
animals- if u have fabric with kitty cats/dogs/ fish on them
secret nothing-matches group-this could be anything that u arent sure fits in any other group!
WTH group- hee hee..this could be really fugly stuff (fun-ugly) that u may otherwise feel guilty for giving to someone but put it in a group with other fuglies and presto! instant coolness group!!

hope this helps or at least makes u (and everyone) smile at my crazy ideas!!! enjoy!!!

i was thinking if i had a TON of stuff to categorize, what i would do...and after i cried of frustration and overwhelming-ness, i would just have fun with it and make up whatever crazy groups u think they could be in...cause we (the craftster people) are all pretty quirky and ( i think) we would not mind getting whatever.....plus, i mean, you r being IMMENSELY nice by doing this anyways..right, chicas?  Kiss

sorry if i spoke for anyone that feels differently....peace... Grin

Hey guys-
There have been some complications, but the swap is still on.  I will be handling the first part (getting the fabric out to people) through PMs instead of the swap board.  The pairing up/crafting/swapping part will be a regular swap.
I will be sending a PM to everyone who expressed interest in the swap on this thread.  If you have not gotten a message from me today and you want to join the swap, please PM me.  And soon!
Thanks
