I used this pattern for my first sweater, and it turned out fine.  It's actually pretty easy, although it does introduce a few more "advanced' techniques.  I appreciated the learning though.  I'm sure you could do it!

I am a true believer in knits you can try on as you go!  I love avoiding that "Damn!  It doesn't fit!" feeling at the end of a project... Smiley
