These seem pretty popular right now so I've been playing with the design a bit (I make my own b/c I'm pattern illiterate) and have come up with what I figure is a pretty cute dress.

The back has a touch of elastic thread in it to keep snug on the monkey's back. I really love elastic thread.
This one is an earlier version, which I'm showing b/cI like the slip showing

As you can see the back has some issues

love comments!

A quick tutorial:
This is the shape for the top:

- cut two of this shape, one shell and one lining.
- cut two straps (1.5" x 9", folded into itself and sewn down side) OR have a strip of coordinating bias tape nearby
- and two rectangles, one of lining, one of shell. Make shell rectangle 2X
width of the waist x 14" and lining rectangle 2X
width of waist by 16" (for a size 3, calf length. Adjust as desired)
Right. Put right sides together on top. If not using bias tape to make the tie, pin straps facing downwards on the pointy bits inbetween the lining and shell. Stitch neck and sides, reinforcing the strapes.
Open up and stitch back part together.
Use elastic thread or zig zag elastic along the back seam.
Iron seams. If you are using bias tape ties, sew it on at this point.
Take your two rectangles and sew short ends together to make tubes. Join these two tubes to make skirt and slip, and gather into the same measurement as the waist portion the the top.
Stitch skirts and top together. Hem skirts.
Ta-da!
Or not. I realise this tute is a little sucky but I'm sure you can figure it out as long as you have the top shape. Good luck to anyone who tries it!
