You might want to try rolling the cane with something like a piece of plexi or glass.  That way it is like rolling with one big hand and reduces the chance of twisting up the cane.  If it does get twisted, you can usually just twist it back into shape.

When I make canes, I like to have some of the pattern extend to the edges.  I then have a line going down entire cane to make sure I can see any twisting so I can untwist as I reduce.   Wink  I think I have heard this called a register mark?
