I came across String of Purls on the Marietta Square last week and I wanted to let you all in on it! The owner, Ginger,  is one cool lady with a great selection of yarns and supplies.  I hate shopping big box, so this is right up my alley.  Also, they offer knitting classes and on Thursday nights they have a "free knit" where everyone just hangs out and offers advice.  Also, there's free parking behind the shop. (very important in the square)  I hope that ya'll get a chance to check it out.

170 Roswell Street in Marietta 30060.

770.419.4424.

Also, the website is www.string-of-purls.net

one saturday a month that have a free xpert there for 2 hours in the morning 10-12 or something..

I went for help and the lady was so awsume. One of the NICEST shops around. I didn't like the yarns, tho they carried Dale Fauk i think it's called and some others I havn't seen at other shops. I just didn't see much yarn that interested me, but I think its how the store is layed out. Also they where short on needles.

But again, one of the nicest places you can go, all the knitters who come in are nice to.. where at some other stores other knitters wont even look you in the eye.

Tell me about it.  There is one in particular, Cast on Cottage, where my aunt and I went one afternoon.  NO ONE offered to help us and when we checked out, the woman said NOTHING to us, not one word.  Just looked at me and waited for me to pay.  I finally said "THANK YOU!"  and left.  I am never going there again.  Several other knitters have complained about them also.  What attitude!  Love, love, love String of Purls.

its very sad those snotty knitting shops.  i have run across that in most all the knitting shops that i have been to.  thats great that there is one on the square.  i am moving back to marietta to be with my parents for a couple of months, and i will surely check the place out!

does anyone else have thoughts on the yarn/needle situation there?

i'm not terribly fond of SofP's selection, lots of great scarf/novelty yarns, not so much wool, sillk, etc. (unless the stock has changed since my visit in early spring).  they had a decent needle selection, though.  the only miff i had was that i stood at the counter for a full 10 minutes waiting for someone to appear to check me out, and finally left because i'm not sure anyone was actually in the store.  i did try finding someone to ask if they could help me, to no avail.

there's a new store opening on the square in late aug/early september...my best friend dyes for lorna's laces and they just filled a big order for them.  my understanding is that they plan to stock more wool & the like type yarns than novelty yarns, so they should be a good compliment for SofP.  nan is supposed to email the store's information to me shortly, so i'll share as soon as i have it.

right now i adore dunwoody yarns. www.dunwoody-yarns.com  julie, the shop owner, is a darling, and they have a great selection of blue sky alpaca, cherry tree hill, ggh, classic elite...and an awesome selection of clover bamboo needles.  any size, any length, you need it, they have it.

i've had mixed experiences with COC.  On my first trip, they were very condescending, but I chalked it up to the fact that we came in at 4:40, parked in the back room to look at patterns, and stayed until they kicked us out.  When I said as much to the owner as she indeed kicked us out, she seemed a little put off by it.  another time, the same woman was sweet as honey when i was looking for swtc patterns, bent over backwards to help me pick yarn & find patterns.  they were super busy, too, but she took her time making sure i had everything i needed, and i was only spending about $30 or so.

all in all, they're a little far when i can make it to dunwoody yarns on my lunch break. =]

I'm also not a big fan of SoP, now Purly Gates, selection. I don't really like novelty yarn at all & want just plain yarn. m*babylon, please post any info you have on this new store opening up. I may have to scoot up to the square and see if I can see anything  Wink

I've also had the same experience (more than once, actually) at Cast on Cottage.  In fact, I was in there a couple of days ago and left pretty angry (although I did purchase and nice orange sock yarn that my SO loved).

I can deal with being ignored as I like to shop without interruption anyways, but what I can't deal with is people talking to me like I'm an idiot.  I should have known after the first bad experience not to go back, but it was the closest LYS at the time.
