Reality Bites, I have the teeth marks to prove it

So I recently decided to take all my pirated (I mean "back-up") DVD's out of their jewel cases and put them into binders in an attempt to free up some shelf space. Once that little task was complete, I was left with a big box full of empty cd jewel cases. So, what to do with them? I did make a few pen / pencil boxes, but then decided on trying a bird house. Sure, it turned out a little bigger that planned (as usual), but it looks pretty cool. Now, as long as the plastic cases don't focus the sunlight like a magnifying glass and fry any potential occupants, we will be doing OK. Hot glue and some free time goes a long way. Enjoy

Yeah, I think your potential inhabitants might be a bit toasty in there - however - that would make a kick ass seed starting area - like a mini greenhouse - very cool!  Now if only I could gather enough up to cover my portable greenhouse thingy.... oh yeah.. I can see it now... big horking cd cover for my 4 shelf starting station... heh heh heh - but hubby, the cheap plastic cover got ruined in the thunderstorm when the station fell over and landed on the picnic table... I HAD to do SOMETHING.....

I love it even if nobody moves in to it!
Very clever!

Mini-greenhouse huh? Not a bad idea. If no critters take residence in it, which they probably won't, I will have to use it for that. Thanks for the idea.

I love this. You arranged the colours beautifully. I would so make this, except I know my parents would not appreciate bright colours in their garden which is au natural- or something.

Great work, I agree that you could sell things like this.

I absolutely love this idea! Please let us know how this holds up outdoors with the hot glue.  I don't use it often for outdoor projects because I fear for the longevity of the project. I have a feeling you are onto something with the plastic and hot glue.
Besides green houses you can make toad houses too.  Or a cool cat house for inside...OMG the possibilities are endless!
YOU are awesome!

Thanks for all the positive feedback. So far, the bird house has held up great. No problems at all, other that than the fact that not one bird has been in it, even with baiting them with seed. Could be the material or the fact that the birdhouse is too low to the ground. Oh well, it still looks cool. lol. Feel free to check out all my projects (available through my profile) for I have alot of cool stuff. Enjoy

That is so pretty! Smiley

I think it is a bit close to the ground for birds to take to it.  You might also try putting some twigs, leaves, bits of cotton, etc. inside so that the feathered ones get the idea.

It's beautiful. I had a ton of those laying around and just threw them away. God, I'm dumb!

It is way too close to the ground for most birds to be comfortable using it.

But it's still a great idea and congrats on making a BEST OF project.

foldingj - hey, did you ever get any inhabitants in your house?  I wonder every now and again - as I look outside and I have some inhabitants in my wooden ones that my dad made me but I keep thinking of this one - it was so pretty!

Hey there, I work at a store where we sell all kinds of backyard birding stuff and your house is a really awesome project, but I don't think you'll be getting any birds living in it. The size overall isn't right for the smaller birds, they are very specific and like larger or smaller openings to get in the house based on species. However, I think the main thing is the plastic, birds won't nest in there if they feel the temperature isn't right.
But I think using it as a mini green house is an great idea if you want a functional use for it, but just using it as a piece of yard art on its own would still be great. Awesome colors and awesome job.

Unfortunately NO. During a storm, the house was blown over and seemed to explode on impact. I haven't made another one as of yet, but I haven't rid myself of the materials yet either. I'm sure I can come up with some other crafty ideas for those parts (for I have many). Thanks again to all for looking. J

I really like this idea. I could see doing this as an anti curtain too. Make some sort of window hanging. Very cool idea. I might just have to test this out with some that I have lying around.

Hmmmm. That curtain idea sounds very cool. Make sure you post some pics of it if you decide to do it. I would love to see it.
