It was rainy, the kids were playing with salt dough...What can I say?
I saw these at a craftshow and decided to make my own. He's got a couple coats of Mod Podge to keep him from rotting.
Behold, my pothead:

Those are chives, btw.
Nothing too interesting.

He cracked pretty badly in the oven, as you can see. I was going to fill it in and then paint over it, but I really like how organic he looks unpainted. I'll just keep him up against a wall, I guess.

Thoughts, comments, suggestions on how to keep cracks from occurring??

I think you need to put him in while the oven is still cold and then turn it on.
I think his toasty buns are cute  Wink

Aw, he's cute! To stop them cracking, put them in next time on a very low heat for a long time! The cracking usually occurs because the moisture in the dough is heated too quickly and forms steam. However a skin has already formed over the top (due to the heat) and it's the break through of the steam which causes the cracking. It's the same in pottery - first you dry the clay out as much as possible, then you increase the heat slowly allowing the moisture in the clay body to be released. If you ramp up the heat too quickly, cracks appear in your pottery!  Wink
