If he's Japanese, he probably looooves biru. Buy him a big bottle of Kirin or Asahi and knit up a cozy for it. If you're super keen, you could knit "kanpai" or "toriaezu" in hirigana or kanji on the side. Or embroider it. I also think he'd love a scarf or anything you make him. Teachers really love knowing their students appreciate them  Smiley

I've lived in Michigan all my life, and if he's going to be teaching here, he'll need a hat. Hats, especially ones with ear flaps, are almost essential for the coldest months of the year (well, in my opinion at least). Depending on where he's going to live, it can get pretty windy, so a good long hat protects your face from big gusts of snow flurries.

That said, scarves are good too, but if he has a coat with a big collar, he can do without a scarf.
