Hey all!!

I happened across an old Singer sewing machine (the black metal kind with the light attachment and the foot pedal) in one of those desks...  You know, where the machine folds into the table and you close the lid and it just looks like a little cabinet?

Well, I've never sewn before (EVER--strange, I know, but I took typing instead of HomeEc in Highschool) but it seems to me that the machine is working.  I plugged it in and turned on the light and tapped the little pedal thing and the needle went up and down.  So that's a good sign, right?   Roll Eyes

So, does anyone have any pointers for a novice using one of these machines?  Do I need any doodads?  Attachments?  Tips for avoiding sewing my finger to the table?

I'm a complete novice, so (sew! hahahah) any suggestions are really welcomed!!

checkout http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html
if you haven't got the original manual you SHOULD be able to download it from there.

My grandmother used to let me play with hers when I was very little. She would let me work the pedal while she drew the fabric through. I have still never been able to reproduce those perfect, straight stitches she seemed to do with little effort.

She died when I was still really young but she made sure she told everybody that that sewing machine is for me when I have my own house... I live in a cramped nyc apartment now, but someday i plan on moving back to NC and having a space specifically for that beautiful machine.

I think they are so lovely, i love the little tan-colored designs up the side of the black singer body; i also love the elaborate pedal.  WHat a great find; I hope you keep passing it on for years and years!
