- One paper back book. The cheesier the cover, the
better. Paperbacks come in a variety of sizes, but look
for one that is at least 7" high and 4" across.
- One piece of sturdy paper or card stock.
- One piece of clear vinyl. Check your favorite fabric
- One Snap Faster Kit. Again, check your favorite
fabric store around the velcro and other closures.
These kits cost about a dollar and come with a tool.
(The blue plastic thing.)
You will also need: Needle and thread or sewing machine, a hammer, ruler, scissors, a pencil and paper clips.
Remove the cover from the book. Cut your book cover, paper, and vinyl so that each measures 7" by 4".
Find the middle of the book cover and mark
it with a horizontal line. From the top,
measure one inch down and make another
horizontal line. Do the same for the bottom.
Now fold along the lines you made.
If your book is old and brittle (mine was) use
some scotch tape on the parts you will be
folding. This will keep the paper from
Place the vinyl over the book cover, lining up the edges. Use paper clips to hold them together as you attach the snaps.
Attaching the snaps:
Read the instructions that come with your kit first and practice on
a scrap piece of fabric to get a feel for it. You will be placing the
button pieces in the enclosed plastic tool and then using a
hammer to connect the pieces. It is really quite simple.
Tip: Be sure you are working on a hard, flat surface. There is no
need to hit the snaps with force. Doing so will dislodge your
snaps. Instead, firmly but lightly hit each side with the hammer
about ten times. It works like a charm!
Snap Placement: On the top and bottom segments of the
wallet, find the center. If your original measurements and cuts
are correct, this would be two inches in from each side edge and
one half of an inch down from the top edge. Mark the center
point with a pencil. This is where you will place the snaps.
Using the same measurements as Step Two, mark
three horizontal lines on your paper and fold.
Getting out your paper clips again, place the paper
lining on top of the book cover, fold over the edges,
make sure it is all even, and clip the folded edges in
Make sure the paper clips are not in the way of your needle
before you start sewing. By sewing the edges together you
are attaching the lining to the book cover and forming the
pockets by way of the folded edges.
Sew as close to the edge as you can.
