Monster Mittens

A young friend of mine likes to play monster... but every monster needs claws and those are not allowed.  These, however, are parent approved:

Adorable!  What yarn did you use?  What are the "claws" made out of?  Did you make up the pattern?  Your friend is going to love them.

The yarn is Paton's Classic Wool Merino (223 yards and I used about half a skein).  The pattern is sort of my own making.  Morehouse Merino has a pattern for shark mittens which I saw online and thought "i can make that".  Each mitten is basically a large garter stitch rectangle that is folded in half.  After sewing up the side seam about half way,  I picked up 9 stitches for the thumb tube.  Completed the thumb and continued sewing up the side seam.  For the claws, I had intended to use craft felt but found craft foam to be softer, easer to cut, and held its shape well.  I used a hole punch to make holes through the bottom of my claws, inserted the foam into the top opening, and then sewed the top of my folded over rectangle through those holes - closing the top of my mittens
