Great responses, both of you!

Do you think the clerk caught your drift??

1) why is she working in a hardware store?
2) Is she stupid?
3) She should grow up and realize that women can do everything that men can do now.  And more.

Nice responses... but seriously, who says that?  It's annoying when customer service people make ridiculous comments like that to people they don't even know.  Does she think she's funny or something?  If you're trying to make small talk, make POLITE small talk.

mkohut- Dave (boyfriend) theorized that perhaps she thought he looked like a guy who likes tools (cause he does) and that I looked like a girl who is not interested in tools since I was wearing a frilly skirt and pink heels. Though I do happen to be a gal who's interests lie in weilding a hammer whilst wearing a dress.

Also, I would think it would be hard to tell that the tools were not for me since I was lovingly clutching the dapping set while I waited in the check out line.

My husband is thrilled that I like tools. All I had to do was mention that I "needed" a router and a drill press. I had them both within a week. No birthday or holiday.

I'm so jealous!

This Christmas, I was told that I was only allowed to ask for one tool, and since I had already asked for a shopvac, that was it.  I tried to argue that a shopvac was more of a garage accessory, but no dice.  Still, man I love that shopvac.

My boy is of the geeky variety... Once, very shortly after I moved in, a friend of his insisted that the jigsaw used to install the kitty door must have been one he borrowed and never gave back, since "Man, you know you've never bought a power tool in your life."  The boy responds, "That may be true, but that's not yours, it's Rainy's."

Mmm... router... drill press...

I paint houses for a living-- I've been in new construction for ten years..so I get to hobnob with  carpenters who are more than happy to show me 'tricks of the trade' and keep me informed  about which tools are worth the money and that type of thing.

Ten years ago the crews  knew I could do the job and gender didn't ever seem to be an issue with them  but I got a LOT of attitude at the hardware stores like you got from that salesgirl. Back then I never ran into other women on the job - I never even saw other women at Sherwin Williams pro-show.

The last couple of years there were tons of us and attitudes like that are becoming more and more obsolete. Finally!! Hooray!
