it was a needle for sewing ribbon. not sure what they are called, but it has a really big eye and a dull point on the needle. i got it at jo-ann's.

these are really cool and i love the book binding diagram.  i just "winged" it when i made the couple of books i've made.  awesome work!!  i'd buy 'em.

that would work too. i honestly just looked for a needle with the biggest eyelit i could find. it had to be big enough to fit hemp twine - pretty thick. i think i broke a few when i was working on it, so would recommend getting a bigger pack if you are trying this out.
