if any of you are ikea-fanatics like me then you are probably familiar with the 'moppe' boxes. for those of you who aren't, they look like this:

well the plain, unfinished wood was boring me so i did this:

red stain and some links from a coppery coloured chain. plus a coat of modge podge to make it glossy.

When this girl at the museum asked me who I liked better, Monet or Manet, I said, "I like mayonnaise."  She just stared at me, so I said it again, louder. Then she left.  I guess she went to try to find some mayonnaise for me.

wow, I love it.  It looks so Asian flair.  How did you plug up the U-shaped openings that are in the top photo?  I've always loved boxes, containers, and esp IKEA boxes, but I've never bought a 'moppe' cos I wasn't sure what to do with it to make it presentable.  You did a great job!

Moppe is essentially boxes on shelves, so you can just take the boxes out and turn them around and replace them so that the u-shaped openings are at the back (I'm pretty sure that's what was done above).  This is perfect if you want to add handles because it sort of looks dumb (at least redundant) if there are both handles and the u-shaped openings on the front.  The moppe is excellent for refinishing -- I stained mine and then added handles.  It ended up looking so much better than unfinshed wood.  I plan to get some more and decoupage them.
